Qatar 2022: Why is Russia not playing in the FIFA World Cup?

Despite Russia's invasion of Ukraine on March 24, they managed to qualify for the World Cup play-offs and are scheduled to play against Poland. FIFA banned Russia from playing in Qatar after the Ukrainian attack, despite hosting the previous World Cup.

Russia qualified for the World Cup play-offs after finishing second in Group H of the UEFA qualifiers. They are all set to play Poland in the playoffs on March 24 when Russian forces invade Ukraine on February 24.

Russia's appeal dismissal led to a boycott threat by Czech Republic, Poland and Sweden in their play-off pool.

On February 28, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia and Russian clubs from participating in tournaments such as the 2022 World Cup, following recommendations from the International Olympic Committee.

After their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which was filed soon after, Russia's appeal was dismissed on March 18. Poland eventually made the trip and beat Sweden to secure their place at Qatar 2022.
