Fourth seed Kasper Ruud lost to top seed Taro Daniel 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (5) in the round of 16 at the Mexican Open on Wednesday.

Before defeating Ruud, Daniel's best win was against Novak Djokovic at Indian Wells in 2018, when the Serbian finished 13th.

Daniel will look to build on his success against Alex De Minaur, who defeated Opoakopo Berretti 6-1, 6-0.
In other matches on Wednesday, Frances Tiafoe beat Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 7-6 (6) and will play Taylor Fritz, who beat Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-4.
MacKenzie MacDonald also beat Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-0 and will face quarter-finalist Tommy Paul when Michael Mmoh retired in the second set, while Matteo Berrettini was beaten by Elias Ymer 6-3, 6-3.
