Canada women’s team reach interim agreement over funding

The terms of the agreement reflect the status of the men's national team, Canadian FA, with per-game incentives and performance-based compensation.
The Canadian Soccer Association and the players of the women's national team have reached an interim funding agreement until 2022, the sport's governing body said Thursday.
The terms of the agreement reflect the status of the men's national team, Canadian FA, with per-game incentives and performance-based compensation. A final collective agreement is still being negotiated.
The women's national team's last contract with the Canadian FA expires in 2021.
"It's about respect, it's about dignity and it's about leveling the playing field in a fundamentally unequal world," said Canadian FA General Secretary Earl Cochrane.
"We have consistently and publicly said that fairness and justice must be the pillars of the new contract with our players, and we continue to do so now."
A labor dispute between the governing body and the women's team has sparked chaos ahead of the Women's World Cup, 150 days before the quadrennial tournament begins.
The Olympic champion paid for the SheBelieves trophy last month, threatened with legal action over the salary bill and plans to attack the budget.
Before the opening game of the annual round-robin tournament, they took to the field wearing purple shirts emblazoned with the word "enough" and earlier this week Canadian FA president Nick Bontis announced his resignation.
