Tennis player Nick Kyrgios confesses to assaulting former girlfriend but avoids legal punishment.

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios pleaded guilty to raping his ex-girlfriend but escaped conviction.

The 27-year-old pleaded guilty in a Canberra court after his lawyers were unable to dismiss the charges on mental health grounds.

During a fight in Canberra in 2021, someone pushed Chiara Passari to the pavement, according to a court hearing.

The judge referred to the incident as "an act of foolishness or annoyance," and Nick Kyrgios avoided having a criminal record.

After the verdict, Kyrgios released a statement saying he was grateful to the court for dismissing the charges without conviction.

I was not in a good mood when this happened and I reacted to a difficult situation that I deeply regret.

I know it wasn't nice and I sincerely apologize for the hurt I caused.

Nick Kyrgios pushed Passari during argument on Jan. 10, 2021 after he walked out, according to court facts.

Pasari reported the incident to the police the following month, but did not file a formal complaint. The couple reconciled and resumed their relationship, but after the split, Pasari filed a formal complaint in December 2021.

Nick Kyrgios tried to resolve conflict, called Uber and attempted to remove Pasari from car, according to his lawyer.

"It was in that context and frustration that my client reacted and the attack took place," said Michael Koklis-Smith.

The court heard that Mr Kyrgios swore at Ms Pasari and told her to leave the rice.

The court heard that Mr Pasari felt some pain and later noticed that he was grazing his knee.

His lawyer said the court heard an apology from Kyrgios the next day - which showed he accepted responsibility for his actions.
